New Car Vs. Old Car Smell

Posted by lilBlue, 28 August 2011 · 360 views

Everyone likes new car smells. So do I but they wear out after a while. I don't like pine tree scented cars or anything with a strong air freshener. It's unnatural to be stuck in a tin can that smells like a perfume store. What I've noticed is that no matter how old the VW Bugs get they keep a unique and wonderful smell. Sure, there are times iy might be mixed with smoke or beer or someone's perfume or cologne but the Bug smell always comes back. I think it's one of the things that makes it so unique to those who own and have owned them.

I also know that smell. I think that the reason it is so nice and soothing is that the cars have had such a long lifetime, and have really been broken in. I think that smell of vinyl is really the best.
I managed to buy an older car in the same year it was made but the place had the new car smell. I swear I will buy my next car there if I can just to get that same smell back, it lasted longer than any other. No idea what their secret is either.
I can't say that I've noticed the smell but the next time I get into one I'll be sure to sniff hard and see! I'm between cars at the moment, looking for a nice old Bug or similar. I hate new cars!
I wonder what that smell is - we are all smart people! Can we try to brainstorm what that new car smell is? I am not sure myself. I know the old car smells are usually vinyl though.
My car started having a horrible smell and we couldn't find the problem anywhere despite numerous cleanings. My husband finally found the problem in the form of a dead rat curled up near the engine. I swear I can still smell it. I'll take any smell over that.
