Olive Harvest

Posted by Ali, 16 October 2011 · 285 views

We just finished our Olive harvest and I have to say that it is my favorite time of year. I am not rich in land but the little bit of land that I do have is rich in olives! This year all of my nieces and nephews were already back in school when the olives were ready so we had to hire workers to help us.

My brothers and I all use the same crew of Palestinian workers and we all work together to help each other with the harvest. It is a beautiful time to spend with the family harvesting every day for a week until all the olives are in.

Then we bring them to the press in town. We have one of the best presses in all of Lebanon right in our little village. The Italian UN workers helped the press owner to set up the business. Huge mill stones roll over the olives day and night and the whole town smells of fresh olives.

I have lived on four different continents in my life and I loved every place that I have been but nothing says home to me like the sweet fragrance of the olive harvest.

That sounds wonderful. It must be a beautiful place you live in. I love olives, but have never grown them before. I bet olives are always on the menu in your town.
Those are really looking great. I have never grown olives myself, but it reminds me of this fellow who drives around in a VW Bus selling all kinds of fruit. What a great vehicle for that, huh!
My wife likes olives though I'm not keen myself but I'm assuming that you live in Italy, now that would be cool! I'd love to live somewhere where it's warm all the time!
I love olives and also the smell. We do all of our cooking with olive oil. I bet you do too. It must be really great to be able to use stuff that you have grown yourself like this!
Mattmac, I don't live in Italy. I am in Lebanon. We have wonderful olives here and our olive oil is very strong and full of flavor. We use olive oil for everything. For my small family my wife uses 20 liters a year and that is just for eating fresh. We pour it on our beans and hummus and all of our salads and even on our meat. For cooking we use sunflower oil.
