I have had a slight mishap and broke the new bit I was meant to be fitting to my car, now it won't move till the postie brings me another one

It was one of those silly moments of hitting it with the hammer at the wrong time :pinch:

I decided to have a look at the bushes at the front end of the gearshift rod on my 412 and replace the plastic cup at the base of the gear stick as it was a tad worn and I have been having a few problems selecting 2nd and finding reverse instead, a tad embarrasing as we all know that horrible grinding noise it makes :shy:

Anyway after a lot of fighting and cursing trying to do the job through a 3 inch square I got the new one seated loosley in place intending to tap it in when the socket extension slipped and went through the bottom of it :stunned:

Whilst in there I checked out the bush that sits round the shift rod at the front end of the tunnel where it sits through a hole only to find that this bush was mainly in pieces in the bottom of the tunnel  . After seeking advice from some Type 4 experts I have been adviced that to replace this £1.95 bush is an engine/gearbox out so I would better of finding a way to bodge the job using some old window rubber, bike tyre bits or cable ties as I should be able to force them into the small gap to stop the rod wobbling around. It should hopefully hold untill the clutch or another major job warranted removing the drivetrain etc.

Wish me luck :woot:

Sorry to hear about your small mis-hap ....

These things happen to all of us though at times. (Like when I broke the fuel pump pedestal off and bits of it dissapeared inside the engine ( :ashamed: ) , I had much fun removing all the bits (and the broken insert that was left in the crankcase... As I did not want any particles present...

Shame that front bush is an "engine out" job. I think they said the same for bugs (my 1303 did have a removable plate but it did not come off) , but I did "just" manage it with a lot of struggling (using a screwdriver to push the rod down (using the holes left after removing the heater levers) , although I have never looked at a 412, so they probably are right about that.

Hope all goes well anyway

I never think of the future - it comes soon enough.
