A quick article covering some of the basic tools needed for home servicing and repairs.


Combination Spanner Set

Everyone needs a set of these. Ideally 8mm - 19mm.


Socket Set

3/8 is ideal.


Pliers

Always useful.


Screwdrivers

A few basic screwdrivers.


Socket Extensions

For your socket set if you do not have enough.


Adjustable Spanner

Always can be useful.


Feeler Gauges

Essential for accurate adjustment of valve clearances and points gap.


Allen / Hex Keys

A variety of uses including the front hub locking bolt.


Gearbox Key

Essential to remove without damage the gearbox drain and filler plugs.


Mole Grips

Wire Brush

For cleaning up rusted parts (including bolts / nuts etc prior to undoing them)


Spark Plug Socket

If you do not have a suitable on in your socket set. Try to get one with a rubber insert so the plugs stay still.


Wheel Brace

Well you need something to undo / and refit the wheel bolts!


Small Hammer

Always comes in handy.


Large Hub Nut Socket

36mm on bugs. To undo the rear hub nuts.


Timing Light

For accurate setting of ignition timing.


Trolley Jack

For safe lifting of the car.


Axle Stands

To support the car when raised. Never rely on the jack alone!


Oil Drain Tray

To collect old engine oil etc. You can either buy one or make one out of an old oil can.


Oil Filler Funnel

Just a funnel and a small piece of hose. Great for re-filling with oil without making a mess.
